This study evaluates and extracts wave height along the coasts of Bushehr Port, located at the coordinates E52.1; N27.7, E52.0; N27.0, and E52.3; N27.5, during the period from December 2017 to December 2018, with an emphasis on the use of Sentinel-1A/B satellite imagery under both calm and turbulent atmospheric and marine conditions, based on two main radar interferometry approaches. Using remote sensing science and image-processing software, this method was able to represent wave heights with acceptable accuracy, in the range of 0.01 to 0.5 m, under calm coastal conditions in the study area. However, under turbulent sea conditions, due to challenges caused by atmospheric phase noise and the need to use images acquired within the same time interval and under identical atmospheric conditions, the method faced limitations related to the temporal consistency of image acquisition, which affects both pre-processing and post-processing stages. Therefore, this method is not suitable for determining wave height under such conditions. Accordingly, it is recommended that other image-processing methods, including spectroscopy, as well as other types of remote-sensing products with shorter revisit intervals, be used to overcome the 6- to 12-day revisit-time limitation of Sentinel-1 and to improve near-real-time monitoring. Data with higher temporal resolution, such as Sentinel-3 products (ALT, OLCI, SLSTR), or sources with faster sampling rates, such as HICO, as well as data fusion and integration methods, are suggested.
