The presence of ferromagnetic materials in vessels causes a magnetic anomaly in the Earth’s magnetic field known as the induced magnetic field of the vessel and is one of the factors used for detecting underwater vessels. In order to conceal the vessel, this field should be reduced. This is achieved by generating an equal and opposite magnetic field using a set of current-carrying coils known as a degaussing system.
In this paper, after arranging the current coils, their current values are optimized to reduce the magnetic signature of the vessel in the Earth’s magnetic field. Specifically, three sets of current coils are placed inside the vessel’s hull along three orthogonal directions, and a genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimal currents. The magnetic field values in this study are obtained using COMSOL software, and the objective function is contrast to previous works is minimized on a plane. The results show that the intensity of the induced magnetic field is reduced by up to 97%, and the shape of the remaining induced magnetic field undergoes a significant change.
