Abstract
The maximum depth of the Strait of Hormuz has been reported to reach about 110 m in its southern part. However, field measurements have occasionally recorded depths exceeding 110 m at certain locations, which are often attributed to measurement errors. Therefore, this study investigates depths greater than 120 m using multiple datasets (Persian Gulf Explorer 2018, WOD09, WOD13, and ROPME 1992) and compares them with bathymetric data from the international GEBCO database. Using Ocean Data View (ODV) software, temperature–salinity cross-sectional profiles were generated and compared at two reference depths: one based on the maximum field-measured depth and the other based on GEBCO bathymetry. The results indicate that, contrary to the common assumption in previous studies that the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz lack deep depressions, there are in fact deep zones (reaching depths of around 200 m) that are not represented in GEBCO data but are supported by in situ measurements. Based on the available data, seven locations around the strait show substantial discrepancies in GEBCO estimates. The findings further reveal that the maximum recorded depth in historical datasets reaches 248 m in the eastern part of the strait and exceeds 187 m in the western part—depths not captured by GEBCO. Accordingly, local-scale studies in these areas (including analyses of the water column, stratification, bottom friction, and deep-water circulation) should account for the actual bathymetry, and caution should be exercised when relying on global datasets.
